All medication changes were actively requested at every visit. The primary randomized, blinded endpoint was the composite measure of responder ratios. It showed that the intervention had an effect on more people than the sham treatment.
The results of the one-year followup showed that the majority were still painless and that some participants experienced longer lasting effects than expected. But surgical solutions for CLBP remain limited as the cause is not fully understood. So until a cure for CLBP can be found, the best treatment is to treat all contributing conditions.
The UC San Diego Health system is able to provide a minimally invasive and safe treatment for chronic low-back pain. For older adults suffering from LSS, this treatment should be considered. Some limitations could affect the results as with any randomized clinical study. Participants were predominantly White and had an average age between 47 and 9. They were either married or in a relationship and had completed at least one college degree. There was a slight difference in the number of participants according to ethnicity and gender. It was still possible to analyze the 263 participants and find consistent results. The treatment group had a higher mean EQ-5D-5L index and fewer days without LBP than the sham-controlled group.
